Rookie Sports


Geelong YMCA “Rookie Sports is a multi-sport program designed for 1.5-6 year olds. We offer two classes- Junior Rookie Sports (1.5-3 years) and Senior Rookie Sports (3.5-6 years). Our program is term based focusing on a different sport every two weeks. The children learn basic skills of the sport through team interaction, playing games & in some cases parent involvement.

The sports offered include development in the following skills:

  • AFL – Catching (Hand Eye), jumping, agility, basic technique of kicking/handballing, team work
  • Soccer (Futsal) – Foot eye coordination, basics dribbling/shooting technique, teamwork, agility, speed, balance, body control
  • Cricket – Running, catching (hand eye), basic passing and bowling, agility, team work
  • Basketball – Balance, agility, basic dribbling/shooting/passing technique, team work.
  • Various other sports are also incorporated throughout the term to keep classes fun and challenging depending on children’s age and ability.

Junior Rookie- (1.5 - 3 years)

Our focus in junior rookie is to create an encouraging and exciting atmosphere. We aim to develop children’s confidence in group environments. During your class you will find many different activities’s including nursery rhymes and group singing. Parent assistance in this class in necessary to help us deliver the best program we can to your child.

Senior Rookie (3.5 - 6 years)

In senior rookie we want to create a fun learning environment for your child. We aim to help prepare them in the journey to starting school. We will focus on team work and following instructions. Parent assistance is encouraged but is not necessary.

EdGym


ymca edgymThe YMCA EdGym Program is designed for children aged 1-5 years. The classes aim to develop basic coordination, balance, spatial and body awareness in a fun environment that promotes socialisation.

The program uses many pieces of gymnastics apparatus including bars, beams, rings, trampolines, ropes, balls, parachutes and other hand apparatus.

EdGym is a parent assisted program. The children love having a parent or carer to help or encourage them. Your reinforcement of what they are being taught will also facilitate their early learning.

Little EdGym


ymca little edgymThis program will be run in the upstairs program room for 1 to 2 ½ year olds. It is an alternative to attending the EdGym (1- 5 year old) classes, with easy transition to this class when appropriate. Class sizes are small and the room is contained. The structure of the program focuses entirely on this age-group, taking into account their activity levels and concentration spans.

Intro Gym



ymca intro gymThis program is aimed at 4 and 5 year olds who are able to follow instruction without parent assistance. Participants may be new beginners or graduates of the Ed Gym program.

Classes run for one hour once per week and the programs main aims include; self esteem, confidence, listening skills, body awareness, class discipline and basic body shapes applicable to all movement based skills across many sports.
